Sackett - Saywood
Tony Sackett joined Hayes in the summer of 1967 from Epsom & Ewell. He was a forward and had to wait until October 1968 for his debut, and made a total of 6+3 appearances before going to Maidenhead United in October 1969. He was playing for Ruislip Manor in 1970-1.
Chris Sadler was a centre-forward who played for Hayes in 1967-8 at the age of 16, while still at school. For Middlesex Schools, however, he played at centre-half. He formed an effective partnership with John Cozens, made 37+1 appearances and scored 10 goals, before departing for university in 1968.
As Press Secretary, Cyril Sage had the audacity to contest the position of 1st team secretary in 1950 with the incumbent, David Jenkins. Normally, club officers were elected without opposition. Anyway, Cyril's cheek was rewarded, when he was elected by 66 votes to 53. He continued in the role, which was soon upgraded to General Secetary, until 1962, when he resigned because of business commitments, although continuing to serve on the committee. When George Jones resigned in June 1977, Cyril was appointed acting secretary. He frequently compiled the matchday programme and was the author of a valuable series Where are they now?, which gave information on players of an earlier generation in 1975-6. When half the board members resigned in protest at the sacking of manager Bobby Ross in November 1979, Cyril was one of them. But Len Goodall's swift and firm action resulted in him being reappointed.
Steve Sailsman was brought up in the Midlands, where he played for both Nottingham Forest and Wolverhampton Wanderers, before moving south in summer 1987. His first club was Wembley, from whom he joined Hayes in August 1987 at the age of 18. He was a left-back, but made only 4+2 appearances for Hayes and left in November 1987.
When Alan Mullery invited Hayes coach Peter Suddaby to join him at Brighton in July 1986, Billy Salkeld was appointed as his replacement, and as assistant manager to George Goode. He had been coach at Walton and had played for Staines Town, Leatherhead (including an FA Trophy Final), Woking and Tring Town. He still kept in shape and made 0+3 appearances, but his stay at Hayes was brought to an abrupt end when he was fired along with Goode in November 1986.
In 1974, when the distinction between amateur and professional was abolished, John Sanders became Hayes first signing from the professional ranks. Born at Hammersmith, living at Brentford, and attending school at Lampton, he joined from QPR at the age of 18. During the season he made 19+2 appearances, scoring one goal, but he found it difficult to maintain his place and left by mutual consent in March 1975.
Among the many competent goalkeepers whom Hayes have produced, few went further than Reg Saphin. Making a single appearance at Christmas 1935 in a 4-0 defeat by Walthamstow Avenue, he became a regular the following season and featured in the 1-1 draw with mighty Arsenal at Highbury in the London Challenge Cup in 1937. During this time he made 44 appearances. Then he was off to Walthamstow. He later played professionally with QPR as stand-in for Reg Allen and for Watford, where he was still playing in 1952.
Two players by the name of Dave Sargent have played for Hayes and they were both full-backs. The first had been a member of Alan Batsford's Amateur Cup-winning side at Walton, and joined Hayes from Leatherhead in March 1977, at a time when Hayes were fighting against relegation. His signing was a short-term objective, as he lived at Eastbourne. During what remained of the 1976-7 season he made 12 appearances and Hayes stayed up.
The second Dave Sargent is better known to followers of Northwood. He joined Hayes from Wycombe Wanderers in March 1996 and made only one appearance, in a Middlesex Senior Cup match, before going to Northwood, where he became a fixture at left-back, before briefly following manager Tony Choules to Hendon. He went back to Northwood for a season and joined AFC Wimbledon briefly in 2005-6 before moving to Staines Town.
When regular goalkeeper Bill Greygoose decided to join Romford, newly promoted from Athenian to Isthmian League, in August 1939, his place was taken initially by AHR Saunders. Saunders played in both league matches before the Athenian League season was aborted because of hostilities with Germany. As league gave way to friendly matches, he played in the first four such matches, including a game against Brentford reserves. He obviously caught the eye in a 0-3 defeat and was signed on amateur terms by Brentford. When the two clubs met again, Saunders was playing for Brentford and they won 8-1. He never made the first team, but later in the season played for Uxbridge against Hayes in a Great Western Combination match. At Christmas 1948, he returned to Hayes as a stand-in for the injured Ron Barham, playing a further 23 times in this and the following season.
