 Having started the 2007/08 season as centre-forward for the United under 18's, Esmond progressed to reserve team football where he returned to his more recognised  position on the right side of defence or in midfield.
In his time under Colin Davis' control in the second XI he caught Garry Haylock's eye as he regularly raided down the flank, so much so that he was offered and signed a first team contract in July 2008.
Aged 19, Esmond has this season earned a regular starting place in the United side and looks very lively on the right flank.
